I am running for Andover’s School Committee because I believe that we cannot build or sustain a strong community without strong schools. Over the past several years, I have been concerned when I hear or read about the budget challenges we face, and the increasing perception that when it comes to funds allocation, it’s “town vs. school.” It shouldn’t be that way: we are one. Strong schools cannot be built or maintained without adequate financial resources, and I believe in making a strong financial commitment to our schools.
At the same time, we have to recognize that we cannot make every project the number one priority; as with all budgets, sometimes we have to make hard choices. Making those choices is not easy, and reasonable people can have differing opinions about what is best. I promise to listen to all points of view and to make the most responsible decisions I can. I will search for areas of compromise, while ensuring our schools continue to provide our children with a top-notch education. I will apply the same level of fiscal rigor to the school department budget that I do in my own home. I will insist on transparency so that town residents can feel confident that the school department is spending its budget wisely.
Do I think this is going to be easy? No. Do I think it’s worth doing the hard work required? Absolutely. I hope you’ll support me and vote for me on March 27.
